 Major PC vendors including Dell, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and IBM, have all been promoting Linux-based PCs in China. Legend Group, the largest provider of IT products in China, has also joined the effort.
Legend is going to launch Linux-based PCs in April, according to sources. Tsinghua Tongfang, another IT provider in china, indicated that domestic adoption of Linux will rely heavily on foreign vendors leading the charge.
Dell declined to speculate on the extent of its offerings of Linux-based PCs into the China market. The company has had Linux-based servers available from its line-up since December 2003. Meanwhile, HP is starting to offer the software on PCs and other products, possibly dropping Linux-based product prices by as much as 20-30%.
IBM anticipates 40,000 of its employees worldwide will be using Linux-based PCs by the end of 2005, according to Scott Handy, IBM’s director of worldwide Linux solutions.
