CentOS 5, touted as a '100 percent compatible' rebuild of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, was released today, featuring the GNOME desktop and a 2.6.18 kernel. CentOS targets those who need enterprise-class operating system stability without the cost of certification and support, chief maintainer Karanbir Singh said.

CentOS 5 is now available for i386 and x86_64 though PowerPC, IA64, and SPARC support is planned for the future.

Major changes in CentOS 5 compared to CentOS 4, according to Singh, include:
  • numerous updated software versions
  • better desktop support with Compiz and AIGLX
  • virtualization provided by the Xen hypervisor with Virtual Machine Manager and libvirt
  • simplified construction of user profiles
Standard features, according to Singh, include:
  • Pidgin (formerly GAIM) 2.0 beta 5 messenger
  • OpenOffice.org 2.0.4
  • Thunderbird 1.5.0.10 email client
  • GIMP 2.2.13 graphics editor
