distro: Linux chasing out Unix: In the enterprise server O/S battlefield

Linux is not after Microsoft. Linux is chasing Unix out of the enterprise server scene. Why not Microsoft? Well, its because Microsoft apparently has not completely succeeded in the data center league."Unix made its inroads on data centers where Microsoft failed," Alex Pinchev, Executive Vice President for Worldwide Sales of Red Hat said. When it comes to the enterprise landscape Microsoft’s weakness has been its scalability, performance and security, for example. Unix has for its strength these, except that it is rather on the expensive side.

Thus, Pinchev, noted "We are looking at a market that is replacing Unix….We are seeing more independent software vendors (ISVs) choosing Linux (over Unix solutions)."

Red Hat, the world’s leading open source and Linux provider, is leading Linux and open source solutions into the mainstream by making high quality, low cost technology accessible. It provides operating system software along with middleware, applications and management solutions.

Pinchev flew in from the US to Singapore recently to join top honchos of Oracle Corporation based here to jointly take a SGD $20 million (about US$13 million) quantum leap to scale up enterprise Linux.

Both companies picked on Singapore to be the hub for helping ISVs and Systems Integrators (SIs) in Asia Pacific (including the Philippines) to make (the) "LEAP to Unbreakable Linux".

Established to grow the ecosystem of ISVs and SIs in Asia Pacific delivering solutions on Linux, the Linux Enterprise Applications Porting (LEAP) center is the first significant Linux initiative here, and the first join Oracle-Red Hat Linux solutions center in the world.

The estimated SGD $20 million committed by both companies will be spent for the cost of software, training and resources for the LEAP center which will be housed at the Oracle Singapore Headquarters.

Set to become a hub for the region’s software industry to harness the potential of enterprise Linux, the Oracle - Red Hat LEAP center will assist ISVs and SIs to port, optimize and certify their solutions on Linux.

By improving partners’ skills on Linux, and providing access to low-cost, high performance, secure and reliable Oracle infrastructure software running on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform, the LEAP center will serve to increase the availability of third-party Linux applications for the enterprise, and accelerate adoption of enterprise Linux solutions in Asia Pacific.

"Red Hat is out of the consumer business," said Pinchev, "It is on the enterprise. (Although) Enterprise Linux is two years old, it is used by telecommunications companies and banks. Microsoft has been developing (something for the enterprise) for 30 years and it is still not there."

DRIVING FORCE

Keith Budge, Regional Managing Director, South Asia Region, Oracle Corporation, said "Third party application availability will be the next driving force for Linux adoption. This is a ground-breaking achievement for Singapore. By fast-tracking the development of a vibrant, extensive, and robust local community of ISVs and SIs developing enterprise solutions on Linux, Singapore is enabling companies around the region to make the LEAP to Unbreakable Linux."

He underscored that the LEAP center is "a facility that is greatly needed by the ISVs and SIs."

For his part, Pinchev added, "Red hat and Oracle’s partnership is strong, as together we have launched Linux into the datacenter. We are now responding to the burgeoning customer demand in Asia Pacific by establishing this Oracle-Red hat LEAP center. Our joint goal is to provide customers as many options as possible when constructing their open source architectures."

Specifically, the LEAP center provides ISVs and SIs with access to resources such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux and software development test beds, Red Hat Enterprise Linux migration services, mission-critical support for pilots and flagship users, and an Intel architecture validation and tuning laboratory.

These facilities will be couple with the full range of Oracle infrastructure software products running on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux platform at the center.

The LEAP center is ready to provide ISVs and Sis with the resources and assistance that will enable them to go to the market faster with applications that are pre-tested and certified on Oracle and Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Partner applications are being accepted from Singapore and the surrounding region at the Oracle-Red Hat LEAP center since June 24, 2004.

During the past three months, Red Hat had 98,000 new subscribers. Oracle has at least 50 ISVs.

ORACLE LINUX BUSINESS UNIT

"We are seeing our customers moving the Linux way. We are seeing a massive uptake. Our customers are deploying Linux to reduce cost," Leigh Warren, vice president for Linux Business Development, Oracle Asia Pacific last month told journalists from the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.

Warren reported, "Linux has triggered a movement across Asia Pacific that has converged from a steady progression of organizations shifting to a low-cost computing model."

He continued, "Oracle’s overarching goal is to help build Linux standards in the Asian markets so that customers can benefit from greater choice of software and hardware products using Linux."

Linux is a low-cost, high performance platform whose development has prompted the rise of strong advocates from developers, users, governments and businesses. This year alone, governments in China, India, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Thailand, have all publicly endorsed the development and adoption of Linux for its organizations. And in the last two years, a growing number of business across Asia Pacific in industries from banking and finance to manufacturing industries have taken steps to implement Linux for mission critical systems.

Oracle Corporation is a large enterprise software company in the world. It is a popular brand in the modern relational database market, e.g. UNIX, Linux and Windows platforms.

The remark about windows remains the overwhelmingly most introduced server os on the world. Implies next to no in this unique situation. Demonstrate to me the quantity of Windows servers taking care of a huge number of synchronous users or associations per machine. On the off chance that they exist, coursework help [www.speedycoursework.co.uk] I would put cash on the chances that are considerably more UNIX machines at this level than Windows machines.

Linux can be as dependable as the administrator running it is talented, which is basically the case with any server. Im beyond any doubt your companion points the finger at Linux at the same time, unless she was particularly terminated for utilizing Linux for reasons unknown, I presume it was her not having adequate aptitude and Coursework Service UK [www.courseworkcamp.co.uk] experience to run a totally dependable Linux server.
